Roses, Thorns, and Buds

We have enjoyed a “tradition” that we borrowed from an activity our Scout Troop does after each camping trip but can be used any time.

Typically while on vacation (because we are eating dinner together every night) we will go around the table and list our “Rose” – favorite thing of the day; our “Thorn” – least favorite thing of the day; and our “Bud” – what we are looking forward to the next day. We try not to use the weather as a Rose/Thorn/Bud and we discourage behavior issues (“My thorn was when my brother punched me”).

It is a great exercise as it provides each family member a time for reflection, lets us share with each other what we felt was an important part of our day, and gives us as parents valuable insight as to what our kids care about.
